Achieving a goal is as important as knowing how to conduct it and stay committed. Health coaching is great because outlined goals are always written on the paper and broken down into small tasks, which lead clients to set up goals they want to achieve in a certain period of time.
Tatjana Popovic, International Nutrition Health Coach, Macrobiotic Educator and author of the e-book “5 Day Detox Program” in Serbian, says that we should buy products that do not contain more than five ingredients, and especially not the ones which ingredients we can not easily pronounce. Furthermore, it is very important to establish the balance between healthy diet and regular physical activity.
Tatjana became a role model to others by overcoming a very serious disease and establishing her own business with the main goal to help people change their diet and lifestyle.
1. How did you decide to become a health coach?
If you have asked me the same question when I was a teenager, I would describe my future way of life totally different from the one I am living today. I am not sure if I would ever think twice about what kind of food I was putting into my body if at the age of 18 I was not diagnosed with cancer on my left kidney. After 10 years of being cancer free, I can say I am grateful for this experience because it encouraged me to motivate people around me to pay attention to their lifestyle.
The first thing that influenced my decision to become a health coach was a long time ago when I gave up on conventional medicine and decided to heal my body by changing my lifestyle and implementing a macrobiotic diet.
Moving to the United States of America in 2010, changing the environment and having the opportunity to meet new people and cultures, I was in a position to get to know different food as well as to learn about different lifestyles. At that time I realized that nutrition and health care are two things I want to devote my life to.
Graduating from the world’s leading nutrition school Institute For Integrative Nutrition in New York, I mastered the ways of helping clients to change their way of life and nutrition or how to implement practical lifestyle methods in order to be healthier and happier than before.
2. What has the role of a health coach taught you?
In everyday communication with people, every new consultation brings new discoveries in the client’s life and also encourages me to think about my own life situations. Most people have wishes and plans on how to achieve their goals but if we do not know in which way we should go in order to achieve them, then from that plan or ‘map’ we will not have any benefits.
Health coaching is great because outlined goals are always written on the paper and afterwards they break down into small tasks, which lead clients to set up the goals they want to achieve in a certain period of time. Besides that, persistence plays a very important role in life of an individual and knowing how to recognize when we will sabotage ourselves in the process of development and improvement and not to give up during the process, presents the real inner wealth.
The role of a health coach has thought me how to make a difference between stress and chronic condition, how frustration in a relationship, life in unhappy marriage or dissatisfaction with a job can influence on our diet and overall health.
3. What is the best advice you can give regarding health?
The most important advice I always share with my clients is accepting the fact that health is not a destination, it is eternal traveling. People usually get frustrated if planned health improvements or changes do not come in expected time and because of that, they give up on certain nutrition regimens or the way of life.
“Research has shown that body recovers eight times faster if we are physically active”
Being committed to the traditional natural food which is not highly processed, presents the biggest challenge of the modern time. Marketing tricks which persuade us to buy food full of additives, preservatives, artificial colors and aromas without reading the ingredients list on the product, leads us to the possibility of getting sick from serious diseases such as: cancer, diabetes, hypertension, Alzheimers disease, etc.
My recommendation is to buy the products that do not contain more than five ingredients, and especially not the ones which ingredients we can not easily pronounce. It is very important to establish the balance between healthy diet and regular physical activity. Scientific research has shown that the body recovers eight times faster if we are physically active.
4. What advice can you give to those who plan to improve the quality of their life?
Aspects that are the most connected with the quality of our life are: relationship with the partner, family and friends, fulfillment with a job we do, financial stability, education, physical activity and spirituality. If there is an imbalance in any of the listed aspects of primary food, it reflects on the condition of the entire body and creates disorder in secondary food.
“You should estimate what is quality of your life at the moment, find the opportunity and improve overall state”
Secondary food is all what we put into our body by eating, drinking or using stimulants. Most of the time disorder in secondary food is connected with conscience or unconscious seeking for food, drinks, cigarettes or narcotics or with irregular and imbalanced diet.
For all you readers out there, I will advise you to estimate what is your quality of life at the moment and to realize where the emptiness is. After that, you should concentrate on the opportunities you have in order to improve your lifestyle.
The most important step I consider is courage to get out of your own comfort zone. Leave everyday routine just on a few minutes and do something what you usually do not do or start a new project which you wanted to do for a long time.
5.What are the advantages and disadvantages of having your own business?
There are more advantages than disadvantages in having your business. First of all, you manage it without the hassle of having a boss. You can independently organize the time off and working hours, and you have the opportunity to earn more money because you are working for yourself. The biggest advantage of all is that you are doing what you love. Considering that I have long-term experience in working in different marketing, design and sales positions, I realized that a 9 to 5 job is not something that suits me.
At the Institute for Integrative Nutrition in New York I had a chance to listen lectures of worldwide renowned experts from nutrition and medicine fields as well as the leading spiritual gurus such as: Dr Mehmet Oz aka Dr. Oz, Dr Andrew Weil, Dr Mark Hayman, Deepak Chopra, Gabrielle Bernstein, who have succeeded in achieving worldwide success by doing what they love. That inspired me to start my own business in which I will enjoy helping other people and causing a ripple effect.
At the beginning of the month we all have to pay bills but it is not the same if we are going to work we don’t like and getting back home stressed, supposed to doing something we love and making a living out of it.
